Statewide Interest: |
Healthier Community. Access to quality primary care for residents of the outlying community is vital. Many residents travel 30 to 45 minutes to the hospital and traditional health care providers. Many residents are retired elderly or migrant worker families who do not have access to transportation on demand. MCRHS has observed that the migrant population it serves has begun to establish Manatee County as a home base. Although their working family members continue to travel where the agricultural work is, the non-working members of the family are establishing homes and apartments in Manatee County. Therefore, many of these people rely upon the services they receive in Manatee County for their primary health care. The non-working family members are often the children and the elderly family members who need health care more often. Keeping the family members who reside permanently (or for much of the year) healthy also reduces the spread of sickness, disease, bacteria and viruses to the family members who come home on weekends, holidays, or seasonally. The chance of spreading diseases and sicknesses to other parts of the state is reduced by providing quality primary health care to migrant workers while they are here in Manatee County. |

Project Description: |
Manatee County continues to experience rapid growth to the northern and eastern parts of the county. The demands of a rapidly growing community, coupled with the current economic environment, have pushed our Parrish Family Health Care Center beyond capacity. The Parrish facility, which opened in 1979, is the first health center opened and operated by MCRHS. The facility is in the old Parrish school and is shared with the Parrish Community Association and Head Start. The patient base we serve and the services we provide have outgrown this facility.
MCRHS purchased some acreage in Parrish, approximately one-quarter mile north of our current location on US 301. Plans are underway to construct a 4000-square foot modular facility on this new site. The facility would provide considerably more room for existing health care services, as well as the ability to expand dental and pediatric services and pharmacy to the Parrish community. Estimates for the new facilty are approximately $300,000. MCRHS has already purchased the land and can provide a match of $150,000 (50 percent) for construction. We request that the State of Florida provide the remaining 50 percent of funds for the construction. |

Is this a water project as described in Chapter 2002-291, Laws of Florida? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
Anticipated outcomes include higher rate of immunizations (both child and flu shots for adults and elderly). We also anticipate greater access to dental care for residents. We also expect that there will be a significant positive impact in the overall health of northern Manatee County because of the availability of affordable prescription drugs through the Health Center's new pharmacy. |
