Statewide Interest: |
To continue year two of a 3-year program funded last year by the state to develop technology for commerical demonstration of Pompano Aquaculture in Florida. The overall goal of this project is to develop a new marine food fish for Florida, affording new opportunities for Florida's aquaculture industry to diversify the species that can be produced and marketed. This project was presented to the FL Aquaculture Review Council in 2001 and was ranked in the top three projects review by the Council and recommended for funding |

Project Description: |
The proposed studies will focus on improving the techniques to culture marine fish using Florida Pompano as the model species. More effective methods are needed to achieve controlled maturation and spawning, improvements are needed in early larval nutrition (e.g. identification of alternative feeds and mass culture techniques for live feeds), larval and nursery-rearing protocols must be developed, and rearing costs must be determined. Marine fish culture requires a mult-year effort and we have already assembled a multi-disciplinary team of researchers to accomplish this project, which was funded for year one during the last budget cycle. The results have application beyond pompano to other high value carniverous marine fish that can be raised in low salinity conditions at inland, environmentally-friendly, closed, recirculating systems. |
