Statewide Interest: |
During the 1999-2000 school year Florida had a total deficit of 1,859 health care professionals. This funding request will provide schools throughout the state of Florida with an additional 750 health professionals in the first year and 900 health professionals in the second year. This will reduce the current burden on school health professionals, or in their absence on administrative staff and principals. This program will also decrease the potential for litigation or unintended harm to students because professional health care is unavailable. The legislation designed to address this problem passed as a portion of House Bill 519 during the past session. |

Project Description: |
Provide funding to implement the public school health care practitioner program, which passed as a portion of House Bill 519 during the 2002 session. This program allows specified health care professionals to donate their time to public school health clinics in exchange for a waiver of professional licensing fees and a maximum of 25% of the continuing education hours required for licensing renewal. This funding request will allow the Department of Health to develop the training materials, and provide supervision, training, evaluation, and materials. It will also provide the background screenings costs for all volunteers, as well as promotional items and recruitment. |
|
Is this a water project as described in Chapter 2002-291, Laws of Florida? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
The Deparment of Health will be able to recruit several hundred volunteer health care professionals, which will help reduce the current deficit in excess of 1,859 professionals. It will bring Florida closer to the goal of 1 health professional for every 750 students and 1 health professional for every 250 medically complex students as recommended by the National Association of School Nurses. This funding request will also assist in alleviating the tremendous public health burden placed upon the school system. It will also decrease the potential for accidents or unintended consequences when administrators and administrative staff are forced to provide medical attention, due to the absence of health care professionals. |
