Project Description:
Project will consist of initial planning to establish an addiction certification and degree program specializing in meeting the addiction training needs of African-American issues. Volusia County, Florida is the home of two organizations, Bethune-Cookman College and Stewart-Marchman Center, that have mutual interest in collaberating to educate and train professional addictions counselors. Bethune-Cookman College is one of this nation's best known and respected historically black colleges. Bethune-Cokkman College conducts a number of research and training programs to address the needs of the local community in general, and the African-American community in particular, on a local, state, and national level. Stewart-Marchman Center is a comprehensive addictions and deliquency program. Bethune-Cookman College and Stewart Marchman Center envision the possibility of a degree program in addiction studies. In addition, the two organizations envision a research institute specializing in the development of addiction treatment models, including models specifically oriented to African American populations. Addiction studies programs are uncommon across the country. In Florida only UNF offers a master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling with a specialty in Addictions. The University of Miami offers a certificate program in addictions through continuing studies. To our knowledge no college or university in this state offers a Bachelor's Degree in addiction studies. Bethune-Cookman College's division of social sciences offers Bachelor of Arts degree in history, political science, social science, education and sociology. The division also offers a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice. This request is offered in an effort to advocate for an additional offering of a Bachelor of Science in addiction studies within the division. Stewart-Marchman Center can assist Bethune-Cookman College in the development of its degree program by providing observation, internship and research opportunities to the degree program. Specific elements of the possible education, training and research center, specializing in African-America addiction issues at Bethune-Cookman College.
