Project Description: |
The Senior Wellness Program/Quality of Life Project is a comprehensive & innovative approach designed to increase the overall level of fitness(body composition, strength & power, aerobic capacity, flexibility, balance & mobility) in older persons, thereby improving their ability to maintain their optimal independence. This is achieved through a process of needs assessment & testing; individualized exercise prescription & the implementation of this individualized exercise program (consisting of individual workouts & group classes.) This exercise program is part of a research project with Florida International University designed to show the most efficacious exercise to improve an elder person's fitness & health. It is the largest community based study ever undertaken in this field. The periodic retesting & resulting exercise prescription modification component of this program is truly innovative & will provide ground breaking research. The program also provides for the screening of participants & the provision of case management services by licensed social workers when necessary. Additionally, there are twice monthly health related lectures, weekly cultural & social activities so as to provide a comprehensive approach for enhancement & improvement of all aspects of the participant's Quality of Life. |
