Statewide Interest: |
This project supports the Governor's Goal of protecting the state's most vulnerable by providing treatment and care to those suffering from mental disorders, and his commitment to quality care in the most appropriate environment. It will provide continued residential treatment services to persons with mental disorders throughout Orange County, which currently has a total of only 30, or 50% of the 60 beds needed for a population the size of the county based on accepted professional standards. It will produce measurable outcomes consistent with the Department of Children and Families for mental health services and demonstrate effectiveness in lowering state hospital utilization and an increase in the number of days in the community, reductions in inappropriate and expensive incarceration, a lower utilization of more expensive deep-end medical services and uncompensated care in acute care facilities (an SRT is $300 less a day than hospital care). The support for this type of care is found in the community, the DCF continuum of care and the Governor's Budget for 20003-04 which supports the system redesign in the G. Pierce Wood catchment area. |

Project Description: |
This project seeks to continue three beds to an existing SRT unit at Lakeside Alternatives. With continuation of these beds, a more traditional model of short-term residential treatment consisting of lenght of stays up to 90 days rather than 10 days can be utilized. This longer stay can provide continued stabilization and transistion to the community beyond crisis stabilization. This project will serve approximately 35 people per year with an average length of stay of 30 days. The services provided are individual, group and chemo therapeutic intervention in a secure 30 bed residential setting as an alternative to civil state hospitalization. The unit operates 24 hours per day, seven days a week and provides a therapeutic environment designed to enhance individual coping skills, communication, problem solving, self-awareness, mental illness management, health, hygiene and medication management. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
It will produce measurable outcomes consistent with the Department of Children and Families for mental health services, and demonstrate effectiveness in lowering state hospital utilization (90% of clients admitted to an SRT will not be admitted to a state hospital) and an increase in the number of days in the community, reduction in inappropriate and expensive incarceration, a lower utilization of more expensive deep-end medical services and uncompensated care in acute care facilities (an SRT is $300 less a day than hospital care). |
