| Florida has the highest percent of citizens over the age of 65 of any state and leads the nation in the number of citizens who are 85 or older. As a result of our state's distinct demographics, older patients already constitute a significant percentage of many Florida physicians' practices and these percentages are projected to increase as the state's elder population grows in size and ages further. Consequently, it is critically important that Florida has an adequate number of physicians who have the specialized knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide appropriate care to older patients. | |||||||||

| The Council of Florida Medical School Deans is requesting stat e funding to enable the Florida Consortium for Geriatric Medical Education to conduct a unique, collaborative statewide geriatrics medical education initiative. The cooperative approach that will be continued through the Consortium will enable all five medical schools to complete this initiative in the most timely and cost effective manner possible. The Consortium is charged with: (a) finalizing development of a comprehensive set of basic proficiencies in each of the following nine geriatric syndrome areas: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, falls, osteoporosis, chronic pain, depression, delirium, sensory impairment, incontinence and drug prescribing for the elderly. (b) developing measurable student performance objectives for each basic proficiency; and (c) developing standardized assessment procedures, based on these student performance objectives, to test medical students' progress in mastering basic geriatric proficiencies. The Consortium proposes to select one of the nine geriatric syndrome areas and use this syndrome area as a "template" for completion of the sequential activities that must subsequently be completed for each remaining syndrome area. Alzheimer's and related dementias is recommended as the geriatric syndrome area to use as this "template" because: (a) dementia pose the most catastrophic health problems facing older Floridians and their families, (b) dementia has major fiscal implications for the delivery of state social and health care services; and (c) focusing on dementia will enable the Consortium to refine the process of information sharing and collaborative decision-making that will subsequently be used to address the related geriatric syndrome areas of falls, drug prescribing in the elderly, pain management and depression that typically develop during the course of Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias. FY 2003-04 funding is requested to: (a) complete the basic geriatrics proficiencies for Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias, (b) develop measurable student performance objectives for each of the five Alzheimer's Disease and related dementia basic proficiencies (See Appendix #3), and (c) develop standardized assessment procedures, based on measurable and observable student performance objectives, to test medical students' progress in mastering the basic proficiencies related to Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias. It is anticipated that completion of the Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias "template" will require two years (FY 2003-04 and FY 2004-05). A status report related to this phase of the statewide geriatrics medical education initiative will be completed by December 1, 2005. Success in this geriatrics initiative will create a model for a uniquely integrated and bench-marked competency-based educational process for all Florida medical students | |||||||||
