Project Description:
This Hepatitis and Liver Failure Prevention and Control Project (Project) would enhance statewide surveillance for acute and chronic hepatitis A, B and C, with emphasis on areas of high risk in the state. This request is for an increase in funding over and above what is in the Governor's Budget for all epidemic diseases. We estimated the part of the Governor's budgeted amount to be $500,000 for hepatitis.
Services Provided/Benefit to State:
Strategic plans and evaluations will be developed for the areas covered by the Project. Hepatitis B vaccine will be provided to at risk school age children; control programs with screening; and adult immunization, diagnosis and treatment will be part of the Project. The State will benefit by a decrease in more costly procedures that will result from identifying and treating undiagnosed and untreated infected people.
Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Reduced incidences of all 3 kinds of hepatitis and reduced costs associated with complications and disability from old and new cases. There will also be a reduction in the death rate of hepatitis.
