Project Description:

The Center will utilize the latest communications technology to connect educators and school personnel in the 12 rural school districts in PAEC with the latest diagnosis, research, and treatment modalities of the psychology, psychiatry, and pediatrics health professions at the University of Florida to identify, study, diagnose and treat troubled school children with a potential for violent behaviors.  The Center and PAEC will also develop and implement a comprehensive training program to educate teachers, administrators, and other school personnel regarding violent behavior warning signs and conflict resolution methods so that they can defuse situations before they escalate to a critical level.  The Center would utilize personnel in the  PAEC service districts to interface with full time Center personnel at UF who in turn would coordinate the professional expertise from the various disciplines in the health professions field.  The goal is to begin this as a pilot project with PAEC this year and then to subsequently expand to service the additional education consortiums which service rural school districts.  It is envisioned that future funding would expand to include Federal and private grant funding sources.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The benefits to the State of Florida would be three fold: 1) The direct consultation and treatment of troubled school children with potentially violent behavior.  2) The development and implementation of a comprehensive training program for teachers, administrators and other school personnel based on the latest research coordinated by one of the top research institutions in the Nation.  3) The expansion of the model so as to be able to service all of the rural school districts in the State of Florida in future years with professional resources that they otherwise could not afford to employ.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The most readily measurable outcome would be the number of school district personnel in the 12-county PAEC service area, which receive continuing training.  Additional outcomes will be measured by the number of students within the 43,000 that are serviced by PAEC that receive professional counseling and medical analysis from the UF component of the Center.  These outcomes would expand as the program expands in future years to incorporate the other rural school districts that would be willing to participate.
