Project Description:

Pursuant to the FKNMS Water Quality Protection Program Document (1996), stormwater sources contribute about 21% of total wastewater/stormwater nitrogen and 44% of total wastewater stormwater phosphorus loadings to Santuary waters.  In 1999, the Florida Legislature acknowledged the impacts associated with the stormwater discharges to nearshore communities in the Florida Keys and approved funding for the development of a stormwater master plan for the unincorporated portions of Monroe County, currently under development.  The proposal would provide support for the implementation of the recommendations of that plan, as  well as, enable Islamorada, Village of Islands, to implement demonstration projects developed from a similar stormwater master plan.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The project is intended to provide a long-term, practical, effective and environmentally sound wastewater treatment and will reduce the number of hot-spots in the Village and provide momentum in subsequent steps to reduce pollutants that presently act, or will act, to deteriorate the water quality in the Florida Keys.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The reduction of a non-point source pollution to the nearshore waters of the Florida Bay and Atlantic Ocean, as well as, increase the acres serviced by stormwater systems.
