Project Description:
The continued funding of National Parkinson outreach centers where people with Parkinsons disease and their caregivers can go for diagnostic services, specialized treatment and counseling. Creation of the centers will reduce and delay the need of state assisted nursing home care. In addition respite care is provided in Palm Beach and Miami-Dade County.
Services Provided/Benefit to State:
The National Parkinson Foundation makes multiple visits to the centers to provide in-service and on going training and support to the neurologists, nurse coordinators and allied medical personnel. In the first full year of operation, the centers saw 17% for new patients than projected with an estimated $1,000,000 saved in state assisted nursing home care. The NPF, at no additional cost to the state, will expand into Naples, Ft. Myers, Sarasota and Tampa.
Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
In the first full year, ther was face to face contact with over 1100 Floridians. Indirect contact through e-mails and phone calls to over 17,000 Floridians. Of the 563 patients seen, normally 17 would end up in nursing homes, and only 3 did. This means a savings of over $500,000 in nursing home care.
