Project Description:

Funds will be used to build grades nine and ten for a high school addition to the AD Henderson Laboratory School at Florida Atlantic University.  AD Henderson Research and Development School at Florida Atlantic University is a premier K-8 public school.  However, of the four university schools in the state, it is the only school that does not also include a high school.  This request would build a high school on the FAU Boca Raton Campus contiguous to the present K-8 school.  Funding for grades 11 and 12 will be sought next year.  Students represent state demographics for ethnicity and socio-economic status in the K-8 school.  These same criteria will be applied to the high school student population.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

This addition will expand student teaching opportunities and allow for the use of new teaching techniques at the high school level.  Technology and innovative teaching strategies, including collaborative and cooperative learning, curriculum integration, writing across the curriculum, study skill awareness and curriculum beyond the textbook will be utlized in this school of the future.  Instructional emphasis will be on teaming, problem solving and critical thinking skills.  The school will act as a model for educational methods and theory to support teacher preparation, especially in urban environments.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Measures will be commensurate with other public schools.  Additionally, we will be able to measure the number of teaching program graduates who gain employment after graduation.  By statute, public university lab schools have a special mission in providing a location for the development of teacher-oriented research, preservice, inservice and community outreach.  As the only public lab school south of Gainesville, a high school at Henderson is a long overdue component in the fulfillment of our mission.
