Project Description:

The Making A Real Change (M.A.R.C) program is a juvenile re-entry/aftercare program designed for sevice level 8 - 10 juveniles, ages 12 to 18, who are re-entering the community.  The program provides viable alternatives and programs for juveniles released from detention facilities as opposed to returning to previous conduct and ways of life which necessitated juvenile justice intervention in the first instance.  The program provides intensive behavior modification programs, G.E.D. training and employment training (including practical skill development, such as application preparation, intervieing skills, workplace conflict resolution skills, etc.) and job placement services.  In part, job placement is arranged with employers which have estalished relationships with the program and which give preference to youth who complete the M.A.R.C program.  Participants are involved for a full eight hours a day.  The program is conducted by certified teachers, but family involvement is also an important element of the program whenever practical, together with appropriate referrals and monitoring to other supports in the community.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The M.A.R.C. program offers the state a proven, comprehensive, cost-effective and community-based program to reduce recidivism among juvenile offenders.  Moreover, the program develops employable skills and provides job placement services for program participants.  The program works in partnership with families, schools, law enforcement and other community-sponsored programs.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The program expects to reduce recidivism among participants by 35 to 40 percent.  Success will be measured with longitudinal study of participants for a three year period.
