Project Description:

The Terminal Access roadway is a three level interchange east of the FEC railroad that provides ingress and  egress for the airport.  The interchange is mainly on FDOT right of way.  The new interchange will require southbound traffic from I-595 and US 1, which represents 80% of all incoming airport traffic, to make a 270 degree loop.  This is typical at all cloverleaf intersections of major highways.  This loop will replace the existing entrance bridges by merging the southbound and northbound traffic on a single alignment of consecutive at-grade roadways, and new overpasses leading to the airport, the effect on flow will be a natural slowing of traffic, which is necessary to reduce vehicular speed and allow for adequate decision time as traffic approaches the terminal complex.  Channelization of lanes is being introduced in order to eliminate dangerous weaving sections and reduce traffic merging on the curve sections. The roadway project will provide for the direct access into the new parking garage, as well as the relocation of the return to terminal loop to the east of the existing US1 alignment.
