Project Description:

The Workforce Development Board, the WAGES Coalition and Broward County Health Department want to develope a pilot project to provide hospital-based childcare for mildly ill children.  Parents eligible for this service will be WAGES clients and parents receiving subsidized childcare who need the serice to report for work.  The Memorial Healthcare System, the tax assisted hospital district for the South Broward area, will be heavily involved in this project.  This pilot project is designed to be replicable throughout the State.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Children will be provided age appropriate activities suitable for the stage of recovery from their illness.  Immunization reviews and appication assistance for state KidCare coverage will be offered.

It is estimated that young children are absent from childcare due to illness approximately 10 days per year.  This is especially significant in families with more than one child.  For single parents or families where both parents must provide incomes to meet expenses, these sick days can put the parents at risk of losing their jobs because of excess absenteeism.

Parents will be able to reporrt to work on days because a hospital based childcare center will be available for the sick children.  WAGES clients will be able to avoid sanctions and continue their progress toward self-sufficiency/  Employers will benefit from reduction in employee absenteeism, also reducing the costs of training new employees.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Reduced loss days at work and increased job retention, updated immunizations and KidCare applications will result from the implementation of this project.
