Project Description:

The Community Public Health Leadership Center, Institute of Public Health, Florida A&M University, will be established so that students and faculty can provide culturally-sensitive service and expertise to communities suffering from disease disparity through student externships, community internships,  and community workshops. Through this process, students and faculty  will understand health needs from a community-based perspective. By receiving expertise from students and faculty, community members can be empowered to resolve health disparities and causes, and promote health in minority communities. As a foundation for the Center, there will also be created a Commission on Disease Prevention and Health Promotion for All People at the Institute of Public Health. This Commission will evaluate government policies and programs which inadvertently contribute to disease disparity, and community beliefs, customs and other barriers to accessing health care which contribute to disease disparity.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Services provided to the state include: 1) community leadership training addressing policy development, grant writing, disease and risk understanding, and fiscal management; 2) student outreach and service to communities, including but not limited to internships and volunteer services; 3) faculty training that is culturally-sensitive and community-based; 4) development of model programs which ensure the availability and accessibility of culturally-sensitive, community-based health care; and 5) advice, through but not limited to preparation of a report,  to the Governor and Legislature on findings and recommendations on measures to eliminate disease disparity in Florida.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Outcomes anticipated include: 1) students who are trained in culturally-sensitive, community based public health; 2) faculty who provide expertise and advice to students, communities and governments on eliminating disease disparity; 3) empowerment of community leaders within the minority population who are equipped to perform measures to reduce disease disparity and secure additional support for such measures from the private and philanthropic sectors; and,  4) model programs which overcome barriers to health promotion and disease prevention in minority communities.
