Project Description:

The Domestic Abuse Outreach Project is a regional program that will provide outreach services in the underserved Jewish communities of Miami-Dade and Broward counties to victims of domestic violence.  The program will include three components: community education, increased visibility of services through the development of volunteer (lay) leadership, and staff training.  This project will help dispel the perception that domestic violence does not occur in Jewish families.  Actually the incidence of domestic violence is the same in the Jewish community as in the non-Jewish community (15%).  However, Jewish women stay in abusive relationships at least twice as long as non-Jewish women.  The project will make victims come forth with their problems when they realize they are not an isolated case.  This program will be designed to be replicated in other parts of the state.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Community outreach as to the extent of the problem of domestic abuse within the Jewish community will be done.  Informational materials will also be made available in Spanish and Russian for those who require it.  Staff will be trained in all three languages so that referrals can be made to  victims to available services in all three languages.

The state benefits in that children, who are also victims of domestic violence, will have their lives made more stable and secure.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Increase in awareness of resources available in the Jewish community for victims.  Problems with children will be reduced as family situation is stabilized.
