Project Description:

In past years, teachers outposted to DJJ facilities were paid for 240 days of teaching.  Last year a 210 day cap per teacher was placed on this funding.  This request is to replace some of the money removed from last year's funding.  This increase will provide a better educational environment for the active teaching of core subject areas, e.g., language arts, mathematics and science.  The project will also provide students in the juvenile justice system with the opportunity to successfully graduate from a public high school in the state of Florida.  All coursework shall be based on the Sunshine State Standards and related material essential for students to successfully master the FCAT.  The amount of last year's funding for this category could not be determined at this time.  Figures shown on this form only reflect the increase in funding only.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Intensive remediation of the basic skills in language arts, mathematics and science.  Research supports the facts that students who graduate with a bonified high school diploma and master essential skills at a high level are more likely to be successful in the job market and/or contiuing education after graduation.  Students in the juvenile justice system typpically are significantly behind in reading, writing, and mathematics and have a high incidence of permanently entering the justice system, e.g, prison.  The increase requested will ensure that school boards have a wider selection of teachers from which to choose for these assignments.
