Project Description:

This project is a non-profit, crime prevention program which provides counseling, education, job training and job placement services for inmates upon release from prison.  Over 180 ex-inmates are expected to be ultimately placed in jobs.  The state has funded this program at a rate of $150,000 per year, each year since 1986 to serve primarily Miami-Dade County.  In seeking additional monies this year over the sum sought in previous years, this proposal seeks to expand this successful program to Broward County.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

This project presents a proven, established and effective way for the State to ensure that ex-inmates have economic self-sufficiency and opportunity once released from prison.  In so doing, this program has a proven track record of reducing recidivism among its participants.  Since 1997, the Department of Corrections has made this objective evaluation of the Transitions program.  The state would further benefit from the expansion of this proven, successful program to Broward County.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

As in previous years, the success of this program will be measured by the number of participants who complete education, training and are placed in employment.  Likewise, lowered recidivism rates among program participants are anticipated.
