Project Description:

This program will develop comprehensive strategies to (1) prevent criminal activities of youth within our community through diverse sports, educational and partnering oppotunities; (2) project long term reductions in criminal tendencies due to community monitoring; and (3) develop collegial relationships with parents, educators and senior citizens with the youth of our community.  Cooper City is willing to send personnel to other communities wanting to use this model.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Continous interaction between Cooper City law enforcement officers and the youth of the Cooper City.  Law enforcement officers will be involved as positive role models and have continous involvemeent with students in their school, their neighborhoods and perhaps even in their places of work through community policing efforts.  A tracking mechanism will be developed by the School Board of Broward County, the Broward Sheridd's Office, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Cooper City Police Department to determine whether, on average, students who have graduated from such an environment, are less likely to be involved in criminal activity than students coming from one which is substantiallly diffferent.

The State benefits by having law enforcement seen as a positive force in the community and by having a lower incidence of crime by youth.  It has been shown that youth involved in programs such as this one are less likely to commit crimes during their lifetime.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Lower criminal activity of youth between the ages of 16-25.  It is known that once a person has reached the age of 25 and has not been involved in crime, there is a significant likelihood they never will.
