Project Description:
This is a cancer prevention, education and early detection initiative targeted toward disproportionately affected, low-income, under-served, urban and rural African American and Hispanic populations. The objective is to reduce the rate of illness and death from lung and other cancers and improve the quality of life experienced by these populations that have suffered near epidemic rises in the rate of several cancers.
Services Provided/Benefit to State:
An increase in access to early, effective screening and diagnosis, innovative and effective programs and prevention methods and early diagnosis education for the affected group. Implementation of the project will be part of HCN's Community Church-Based Disease Prevention Program, utilizing the central role faith entities possess in the affected African American and Hispanic communities.
Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
(1) Increased awareness among consumers of risk factors for lung and other cancers and increased understanding of cancer screening guidelines; (2) Increased access to early, effective, appropriate screening for lung and other cancers; (3) Increased understanding among health care providers of risk factors for lung and other cancers as well as increased understanding of and adherence to cancer screening protocols.
