Project Description:

Eastside P3 Network (EPN) is a demonstration project to teach children and youth entrepreneurial skills. Few young people are introduced to career options that explore opportunities for them to become an employer.  We will create an alternative learning environment for 50 children and youth between the ages of 4-18 to improve in their academic subjects as they learn the basics of starting their own business.

Criteria for Selection:

The target area is a part of the lower income census tract in the city of Bradenton.  The majority of the participants will be low-income youth, achieving below grade level and eligible for free and/or reduced lunch.  Some of the participants will represent moderate-income families and achieving in school below grade level.  The latter group will include students experiencing higher levels of disciplinary referrals in school.

EPN will introduce participants to business concepts.  We will use business language to strengthen our efforts.  A key component for entrepreneur success is networking. Therefore, we refer to project participants as NETWORKERS.  Incorporating wealth-building strategies into their lifestyle will require making astute investment decisions.  We refer to the adult mentors in the project as INVESTMENT CONSULTANTS.  The mentors will be experienced in business.  All participants will be closely monitored throughout the evaluation process and we refer to the process as the performance appraisal.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

?          Classroom training that integrates language arts, mathematics, science, and technology core curriculum to teach life skills, money management, basics on investing, and how to start a business.

?          Incentives for academic improvements, creation of micro-enterprises, innovative ideas, positive behavior, and community service.

?          Trained professionals with business experience to work with participants and schools.

?          Coordination of service delivery among agencies.

?          Apprenticeships with small businesses.

?          Venture capital stipends, and business training packs.

?          Visits to businesses, college campuses, technology centers, manufacturing centers, and financial districts.

?          Training in computers and technology.

?          A youth business incubator and youth job training center to provide opportunities for other youth to learn new skills.

 This after-school demonstration project will lead to a model charter school which train future business owners.  A new study of entrepreneurship in America prepared by the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership asserts the need for more teaching of entrepreneurial skills, especially at the primary grades. Better-trained entrepreneurs will increase the rate of entrepreneurship across the State by reducing failures, improving the efficiency of small businesses and provide more growth-oriented workplaces.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

NETWORKERS will grow in three ways:

(1)        as citizens, through an increased understanding of civic responsibility and a commitment to community involvement;

(2)        as students through improved school performance and academics;

(3)        as individuals through learning life skills that will help them to lead independent and productive lives.

Each participant and their family will:

q          Be a part of learning environments that teach how they can make the transition from passive recipients to active contributors.  They will learn how to move from consumers to producers;

q          Engage in hands-on learning on the basics of business development how to plan for success?budgeting, career options, and apprenticeships.  These experiences will add to their understanding and motivation to learn;

q          Master basic skills Achieve and at high levels. Skill mastery will be presented as a lifelong endeavor.  The emphasis is on skill mastery and work ethics.

All NETWORKERS will be involved in a faith-based, character development institution of their choice.  Spirituality plays an important role in learning and embracing ?worker virtues? as a way of life.  Worker virtues include commitment, tolerance, decision-making, problem-solving, punctuality, tenacity, anger management, teamwork, respect for authority, conflict resolution, etc.

All parents will be actively involved.  We will have support services in place to assist them with employment placement and GED preparation.
