Project Description:
The City of Moore Haven made major improvements to their local potable source in order to accommodate a new private prison. In preparing for these improvements the City requested the amount of water that the facility would use and made the improvements based on the numbers given to them by the private vendor. The actual usage has been much less than anticipated and a $100,000 loss was taken by the City Utility because of this. The City went to the private vendor and asked them to reimburse the City for their loss and they were told that the number that was given to the City was from the State. Local residents in this small rural economically depressed town have borne the burden and accepted hikes in their rates to accomodate the uses from this point on, however, the City is requesting the Legislature to at least pay for the portion that the City cannot recoup, being the first 2 years when it was discovered that the expansion made for the prison was not entirely needed.
