Project Description:

Renovation and expansion of Escambia County Council on Aging center in Cantonment, which has reached its capacity for the number of people served.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The Council on Aging provides a number of home and community-based services, including Meals on Wheels, a site for congregate meals, arts and craft for elders, a visually impaired program, distribution of USDA commodities, distribution of emergency food to low-income families, outreach center for persons needing emergency assistance with energy bills, etc. The need and demand for services in the Cantonment area continues to grow. Expanding the existing facility is congruent with the Governor's "Five Pillars of Aging" which are aging in place, aging in a friendly environment, aging with a purpose, aging with dignity and aging with security. By assisting elders to live in a less restrictive environment, the state will realize a savings through a reduce cost for institutional care. Promoting health living will assist in reducing the cost for medical care.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

The Department of Elder Affairs top legislative priorities for the 200 Legislative Session are to move toward a more integrated continuum of care system which will divert elders from nursing homes to community-based care, support caregivers and keep elders in the least restrictive environment for as long as possible, and promote initiatives and provide resources which focus on self-care and prevention programs.
