Project Description:

This project is to provide for economic development along a state road corridor and to develop a municipal complex on twenty acreas on that corridor, specifically Oakland Park Boulevard.  The Lauderhill municipal complex will include three buildings: police, fire and a central administration building.  The project is programmed to include the following:

* An economic development plan for the corridor and proposed municipal complex, as well as implementation for that plan.

* A land use/urban design plan for the corridor on Oakland Park Boulevard between Florida's Turnpike and 70th Avenue.

* A site plan for the municipal complex, as well as architectural design, engineering design and construction.

* A landscape and beautification plan.

The planning and construction of the complex is the seed to the redevelopment of the Oakland Park Boulevard corridor.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

This program is designed to address the need for economic redevelopment of portions of the City.  The City Commission has committed to the redevelopment of the central core of Lauderhill and to the redevelopment of the Oakland Park Boulevard corridor. The City has been experiencing a declining tax base.  In addition, along both sides of Oakland Park Boulevard properties are declining and some have deteriorated noticeably.  The first two sparks of improvement have occurred this year in the corridor and include: (1) the City's purchase of twenty acres of land for development, redevelopment and economic development; and (2) the redevelopment of an abandoned Albertson's store into a U.S. Post Office.  The city plans its redevelopment of the corridor to turn the tide on this obvious decline, return business to successful enterprises and to improve the tax base of the city.

The 51,000 residents of Lauderhill represent a microcosm of South Florida.  The residents include some 17,000 seniors who are long-time residents of Lauderhill.  Services will be provided to seniors at the new municipal complex, as well as services for other identifiable demographic groups.  It is estimated that there will be a positive economic impact and redevelopment spillover effect to adjacent cities, including Sunrise.  Travelers from all over Broward County and south Florida who utilize Oakland Park Boulevard will benefit from the overall improvements to the buildings and appearance of the corridor.
