Project Description:

This proposal is to develop a new instructional special purpose center in Weston, Florida on a site provided by the School Board of Broward County.  This project is part of a new high school in Weston and includes a new Broward County library on the same site.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

The Broward Community College/Weston Special Purpose Center (Center) will function as the western area of Broward County's "front door" access to the Broward Community College (BCC) by providing services expected from a quality, higher education institution.  It is envisioned to be a complement to the high school project of the School Board of Broward County.  The Center would be designed to provide current and prospective students with a full range of day and evening instruction and student services as a complement to the academic programs at other Broward Community campuses.  This particular oppportunity helps BCC address an issue that would be virtually impossible for the college to undertake alone.  The Center will enable BCC to accomodate the student demand that is forecast to emerge from the western part of Broward County.  As the sole agency, BCC would not be able to afford land for a stand-alone project.  It would also not have the benefit of a library close to a western campus.  A tele-conferencing center, available to the community, is also planned.  This project provides the best opportunity for the State to benefit from a partnership with the School Board and County Commission of Broward County.  This project was recommended by the State Board of Community Colleges (11/4/99), the Post Secondary Education Planning Commission (12/3/99), the Broward County Commission (1/18/00) and will be heard by State Board of Education in January 2000.
