|
The LaGrange Bayou/Four Mile Creek waterway near Freeport is vital to Walton County's economy. The waterway badly needs dredging to continue to serve the industries along its shores. A lack of adequate spoil sites is hindering the Corps of Engineers from dredging the facility. This project would provide dredging of the waterway and a public barge port on the Intercoastal Waterway to serve Walton, Okaloosa, Bay, Holmes and Washington counties. These funds would allow Walton County to purchase about 175 acres at two sites along the LaGrange Bayou/Four Mile Creek waterway. About 125 acres of this land would be used for dedicated spoil sites. Fifty (50) waterfront acres would be used for the port facility. |

The state would benefit from additional tax revenues generated by businesses using both the barge port and the dredged waterway. Federal funding of $6,000,000 is available for this project. |
