Project Description:

MCH is the largest freestanding hospital in the southeast United States, primarily servicing the seven county South Florida area.  The structure at MCH, constructed between 1983 and 1986, utilized an exterior cladding system called the Dryvit Wall System.  This structure houses most of the patient rooms, including the pediatric and neonatal intensive care units, and critical ancillary support areas such as the emergency department, operating roo, laboratory, radiology and similar functions.  Unfortunately, it has been determined by structural engineers that the Dryvit Wall System currently is not safe at wind speeds associated with a Category II hurricane and would not meet current standards under the Florida Building Code.  In the case of a potential Category II hurricane, this building must be evacuated.  Being the only comprehensive, freestanding hospital dedicated to the pediatric population of South Florida, these services cannot be replicated by other hospitals in the area.  The building limitation restricts our ability to receive pediatric transfers from other area hospitals during a hurricane, and would severely limit the healthcare of children in South Florida should the hospital be closed for significant repair or reconstruction.  This project would provide funds to re-clad the exterior skin of the building and bring the building up to the appropriate code requirements without significant disruption of services during the process.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Allows MCH to receive critical transfers from neighboring hospitals and shelter ventilation-dependent children for the Office of Emergency Management.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Upgrade hospital clinical areas to current building & hurricane codes.
