Project Description:

The Gang Activity Prevention Program (GAP) is a collaborative, holistic model of prevention, intervention and enforcement for youth at risk of gang involvement.  It is currently in its second full year of operation.  It has been hugely successful, largely because of the collaboration between the Broward Sheriff's Office, the School Board of Broward County, the Juvenile Justice Board of District 10, The Office of the State Attorney, and Communities in Schools, a statewide not for profit agency, all of which support GAP.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

Funding has been requested to operate the existing Gang Activity Prevention (GAP) program in the amount of $497,512.  Should the program continue to receive funding, additional funds of $252,488 are also requested in order to expand the program into the southwest area of Broward County.  The Western High School feeder zone has twelve (12) schools and serves youth from the southwest county area.  This geographic area has seen tremendous growth with many families moving into this area in recent years.  As a result, the youth population is great.  This area also borders on Dade County.  Youth involved in gang activity tend to be mobile and travel from one location to another with no regard for jurisdiction or boundary.  Preventing gang activity in this targeted area will likely have an impact on this cross-county activity.

The additional funds would provide for additional case managers to serve youth in the school based prevention component of the program, additional law enforcement officers to identify and track gang members, and associated operating costs for both.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Reduction of truancy and delinquency rates for GAP participants and increased parental participation are just two of the outcomes in the contract between the Department of Juvenile Justice and the Broward Sheriff's Office.
