Project Description:

The Gang Activity Prevention Program (GAP) is a collaborative, holistic model of prevention, intervention and enforcement for youth at risk of gang involvement.  It is currently in its second full year of operation.  It has been hugely successful, largely because of the collaboration between the Broward Sheriff's Office, the School Board of Broward County, the Juvenile Justice Board of District 10, The Office of the State Attorney, and Communities in Schools, a statewide not for profit agency, all of which support GAP.

Services Provided/Benefit to State:

GAP identifies youth at risk of becoming or already involved in gang activity and works with other agencies.  GAP is designed to serve 1500 elementary, middle and high school youth annually.  Each will receive an assesssment to determine eligibility into the program.  Services are provided in many ways and include anti-violence, anti-gang, self esteem building curriculum, case management and support services to families, and after school programs with an anti-gang focus.  The law enforcement component is designed as a multiple-agency, cross sworn group of law enforcement officers that coordinate and share information to identify serious gang members in order to dismantle them.

The State can benefit from GAP as it has been evaluated by independent evaluators from FAU who state, "...GAP has the potential to accomplish its goal of implementing a holistic model that will be worthy of replication elsewhere in Broward County, the state of Florida, and nationwide."

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Reduction of truancy and deliquency rates for GAP participants and increased parental participation are just two of the outcomes in the contract between the Department of Juvenile Justice and the Broward Sheriff's Office.
