Project Description:

Significant improvements in Medicaid reimbursement rates for oral health care services and CHIP legislation expanding the number of children covered and eligible to receive oral health care services have greatly increased the demand for such services.  It is clearly recognized by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AADP), the American Dental Association (ADA) and, locally, by the Florida chapter of the AADP and the Florida Dental Association, that additional providers are needed for delivering these health care services to low-income/ low-access children.  Such providers could include both pediatric dentists and general dentists with additional training in pediatric dentistry.  The purpose of this Legislative Budget Request is to expand the recently implemented pediatric dentistry program at Miami Children's Hospital, administered by the University of Florida College of Dentistry.  Distance learning technology, previously supported by the Florida Department of Health, provides administrative and didactic support to the residents in Miami by way of faculty in Gainesville.  The primary enhancement for this program would come in the form of salary dollars for the clinical staff at Miami Children's Hospital.  The second component would be to base another pediatric dentist at the Hialeah Dental Clinic, who would serve both a teaching role and a community service role.  The teaching role would focus on providing supervision and patient care to the pediatric dentistry and general dentistry residents at both Miami Children's Hospital and the Hialeah Dental Clinic.  The community service role would be provided by expanding a recently completed, community-based sealant program into underserved school districts in Hialeah.
