Project Description:

The University of Florida Health Science Center/Jacksonville is comprised of the Jacksonville based faculty students of the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry and the Borland Health Center Library.  The educational programs sponsored by these colleges are closely aligned with the University Medical Center, a State -designated, statutory teaching hospital and a major teaching affiliate of the University of Florida.  The faculty plays a major role in the education of health professsionals in each of these colleges, e.g 20% to 25% of the studetns in the third and fourth year classes, 25% of the Physican Assistant students, and 276 graduate medical students of the University of Florida College of Medicine are based in Jacksonville at any given time.  The University of Florida educational program in Nurse Midwifery is based principally at the University of Florida Health Center Jacksonville.  The Oral Surgery program sponsored by the College of Medicine and the College of Dentistry combines the resources of the Jacksonville and Gainesville campuses into a single entity.  A high percentage (ranging from 53% to 75% depending on the class) of students completing the primary care medical education programs of the University of Florida Health Science Center/Jacksonville remain in Florida to begin careers a health care professionals.  The 5 million in this allocation will, therefore, be used to defray costs of faculty, support staff, and equipment to maintain the important work of the only academic health center in northeast Florida.  This funding will allow the faculty of the University of Florida Health Science Center/Jacksonville to continue its important mission of education, discovery, and service to all the citizens of the State of Florida.
