Services Provided/Benefit to State:

What happens after the school bell rings?  It's not always good.  Many children go without adult supervision, and in fact juvenile crime triples from the hours of 3:00p.m. -6:00p.m. A study reported in P"Pediatrics" states these are also the peak hours for teen sexually activity.  In addition, being unsupervised after school double's the risk that 8th graders will smoke, drink alcohol, or use drugs.  Sports programs have a proven track record for increasing academic performance, increasing an individuals self esteem, and is a positive vehicle for peer interaction.  Sports and fitness programs provide opportunities for social, emotional, physical, as well as educational growth.  The plan would design systems to combine sports programs, fitness for life concepts, anti-tobacco/drug education, stay in school messages, role model talks and a safe, healthy environment during the after school hours of 2:00p.m.-6:00p.m.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Reduce teen pregnancies, reduce the number of children entering the juvenile justice system, increase students academic performance.
