Project Description:

The HIPPY program (Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youngsters) began in 1992.  HIPPY is a home-based program for the educational environment of preschool children and for the promotion of increased awareness by their parents of their own strength and potential as home educators.  Participation in the program helps the children become more responsible, responsive and successful school students, and improves parental self-image and attitudes towards education.  HIPPY concentrates its efforts on families at or below poverty level operating within the subsidized housing communities in Sarasota and DeSoto counties. HIPPY in Sarasota and DeSoto has demonstrated success through eight years of tracking students graduating from the program.  The HIPPY students remain out of the dependency and delinquency systems, are attending school, are staying at grade level, all students in our survey are carring a C average or above and many are on the honor roll.  In each arena these achievements are dramatically above the students from the subsidized housing communities that were unable to be served in hte program.  We have waiting lists of children at each site.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

95% of HIPPY graduates will demonstrate "school readiness" based on the test administered by the school district upon admission into kindergarden.  95% of HIPPY graduates will remain at grade level through elementary school, 90% of HIPPY graduates will not have a referal for child abuse.
