This project is located in south central Orange County and provides a critical east west link from the Orlando International Airport to the tourist area including the Orange County Convention Center, International Drive, Universal Studios and the Disney area.  In additiion, it is one of the fastest growing areas of Orange County.  Diverse types of development and development patterns chararcterize the area, including Lockheed Martin and the Sand Lake Technical Park. The rate and size of growth activities also vary greatly.  The developed area is primarily commercial and industrial in character with residential development located along and to the west of the corridor.  Improved capacity on Sand Lake Road will lead to a decrease in travel time required by commuters and workers, minimizing the amount of wages lost due to long commuting times.  The addition of two lanes to Sand Lake Road will enhance our economic competitiveness on a local, state, national, and global level by allowing additional development to occur along the corridor and remain as an easy access route from the Orlando International Airport (OIA) to a vibrant commercial and tourist district.  The widening of Sand Lake Road is consistent with all applicable long-range transportation plans.  The Transportation Element of the Orange County Comprehensive Plan includes upgrading Sand Lake Road from four to six lanes. Additional, the tri-county Metropolitan Planning Organization, METROPLAN Orlando, shows the need to widen Sand Lake Road from four to six lanes by the year 2020 and includes the project in the adopted Cost Feasible Plan of the year 2020.
