The Intermodal Rail Yard is a capital outlay project with the potential of increasing national and international trade through the Port of Tampa, which would be of positive economic benefit for the Tampa Bay region and beyond. Funding would expedite existing Port plans which document the need to increase capacity for auto trade with Mexico beyond current levels. It addresses statewide interests as a prime example of intermodal transportation defined in the "2020 Florida Statewide Intermodal System Plan" by improving the, "Distribution of goods produced in other parts of the United States or the World to consumer markets in Florida and beyond." This project has community support from several members of the Hillsborough County Legislative Delegation and from local business organizations including the Greater Tampa Area Chamber of Commerce.
