The SRP was formalized in 1999 with the primary focus of reducing nitrates in the ground water, surface water, spring and estuary.  Through the use of voluntary  incentive based programs, the focus has been on reducing nitrogen inputs by developing conservation plans outlining the use of Best Management Practices.  The goal is an eventual reduction in nitrates in the Suwannee River Basin and to optimize the use of nitrates by agriculture.

Project Description:

In cooperation with the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service, the funds will be used to develop with individual farmers an NRCS or equivalent conservation plan to provide cost share for the farmers to implement the BMP's outlined in their conservation plan.  Outreach efforts will also be performed to educate farmers about the implementation and long term operation of the BMP's.  These projects are primarily done in cooperation with NRCS's Small Watershed Program (PL 566) and Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EOIP).
