Statewide Interest:

Statewide goals are supported because of the project's contribution to addressing the capacity needs of the I-4 corridor and the I-4 Master Plan.  Increased capacity and service expansion critically needed to address community transportation options.  LYNX will need additional buses to meet its projected growth over the next five years.  LYNX currently operates an express service in the I-4 corridor and the reconstruction of I-4 will place additional demand on the transit system and require additional vehicles to move traffic off the road and to help mediate the impact of construction.  Service expansions, funded by our local governments, and route improvements have required LYNX to expedite its acquisition of additional buses in order to meet this demand.  In addition, maintaining current levels of service has required the use of existing and newly purchased vehicles.

Project Description:

In FY 2003 LYNX has programmed the purchase of 37 new buses for service expansion and route improvements.  I-4 is planned for various improvements from FY 2002 to 2009.  To alleviate the congestion that motorists will experience, LYNX is proposing to purchase additional transit coaches to implement express service on and adjacent to I-4.  Currently, LYNX has 2 express service routes.  Link 200 is express service from Volusia County to Downtown Orlando and Link 101 is express service from the West Oaks Mall in Ocoee to the University of Central Florida campus.  The proposed express services most likely will run parallel to I-4 on John Young (including the extension through Ben White, 17-92, the Greenway and the Western Beltway).  By summer of 2004, the Regional Intermodal Center will be fully operational and will enhance the expanded route network due to increase in operating capacity downtown and close proximity to I-4.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Increased operational efficiencies, additional jobs.  I-4 is a major freight and transportation corridor.  Due to the proximity of the Orlando International Airport, Port Canaveral and the themed attractions to the tri-county area, the I-4 corridor is vital to the movement of goods and motorists.  The reconstruction of the I-4 corridor will cause an interruption in the movement of those goods and motorists.  The intent is to provide an alternative mode by offering better and efficient transit service, before, during, and after the construction.
