This project meets the intent of the State's  unfunded mandate to infuse a curriculum that recognizes the contributions of people of African  descent. Additionally, it provides an additional method to instruct using the Sunshine State Standards as a guide and provides more time on task for students to practice FCAT formatted questions.

Project Description:

For 6 weeks during the summer of 2002, 8 teams consisting of 1 classroom teacher, 1 resource teacher and 2 students per team will translate the content of the existing African and African American curriculum into grade level and content area appropriate focussed lessons. Each lesson will include a pretest, content knowledge from this State-mandated curriculum; FCAT skills related worksheets as well as a posttest.

During the 2002-03 school year, under the guidance of facilitators from the Coalition for Black Student Achievement (CBSA), the student members of the team will act as guest lecturers to assist classroom teachers in the delivery of the content knowledge to the students in Palm Beach County public schools.

Students will also survey and receive feedback from students regarding the content delivery and project implementation.

Additionally, the student-facilitator teams will work with Equity staff to engage parents, their children and the community in after-school activities to reinforce the learning of the curriculum and honing of FCAT skills acquired through this project.

A Parent Leadership Council for African and African American Curricula, modeled after the District's Parent Leadership Council for Limited English Proficiency (LEO) will be created to provide leadership training for teaching, tracking and evaluating the Curricula infusion progress. THE PLC will also work with CBSA, the District's African and African American Curriculum Task Force, teachers, administrators and students to plan and refine the community component of this project.
