Project Description:

This program will maximize outreach, education and cancer screening tests to Haitian-Americans in five Florida counties. The focus of education and screening will be four breast, prostate, colon, and cervical cancer. Culturally sensitive Creole health education will be provided through workshops, radio & tv shows. Identified persons meeting criteria for special screening will be linked to the screening tests through translation, explanation of test and reminder calls in Creole.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

Approximately 850 underserved Haitian-American men and women will be educated and screened on prostate, colon, breast and cervical cancer. Post test of workshops will have a 90% score or higher showing increased knowledge of cancer, its symptoms, early detection, importance of screening, andthe role of nutrition and exercise in overall wellness. Will distribute 1,000 Creole cancer brochures develeoped by HAAAC, attendance of cancer survivors and/or family members at support group meetings and increased phone traffic following radio and tv programs during the phone-in segment of the shows.
