Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

2.3 million to Florida A&M University Center for Viticulture and Small Fruit Research, to construct Phase III(Final Phase) of the viticulture and enology facility at the Mahan Drive location, Highway 90 East, Tallahassee, to conduct research and provide essential outreach services that will contribute to the growth and development of the grape industry in Florida as defined by its legislative mission (SB898).  The Center for Viticulture and Small Fruit Research is housed in Tallahassee on 12,980 square feet facility that was recently renovated (Phase I and II) from an old winery with state and federal fund.  The present facility has three research labs and a processing area that is grossly inadequate for the Center to conduct needed research and provide essential outreach services to Florida grape growers and processors.  The present facility allows the Center to conduct genetic engineering and biochemistry research in the development of high quality disease resistant cultivars.  For the center to fulfill its missions and address the critical needs of Florida's grape and wine industry, it must have a larger modern facility to expand and enhance its research capacity.  The center needs an additional 12,000 square feet facility for the plant pathology lab to conduct research on controlling Pierce disease that is spreading throughout the US and causing extensive economic losses to grape growers and entomology lab to conduct research in pest management and biological control of leafhoppers that spread Pierce's disease and other vineyard pests that damage grapes; a pilot processing plant to develop and evaluate value-added products from grapes and other small fruits that will create investment opportunities and provide new market alternatives to grape growers and processors; an enology lab to conduct research that will provide for improved wine making techniques for wineries and quality wines for consumers; and a conference room that will facilitate seminars, conferences and workshops for researchers, students and grape growers.  This new 12,000 square feet facility is crucial for the Center to become a fully operational research center that will enable it to conduct the necessary research and provide the essential services needed by Florida grape growers and processors and contribute to industry growth and development in Florida and the southeast.
