In Hillsborough County there are 168,311 seniors who are 60 and over, 26,040 of whom are below the poverty level.  The provision of adult day care, Alzheimer's respite care, congregate and home-delivered meals, and other support services for seniors, allows family members to continue their employment, rather than give up jobs in order to care for family members stricken with the disabilities of aging.  Adult day care costs range from $12,906 to $20,592 per year versus nursing home costs of $32,040 to $49,840 per year, resulting in annual savings of $11, 448 to $36, 934 per client.

Project Description:

Construction of a 7,000 sq. ft. addition to a 8,000 sq. ft. adult day care center to serve 100 congregate dining participants daily, provide health and fitness programs, continuing education, assistance with legal, social security, and Medicare services, intergenerational initiatives, computer training, and other senior related activities and supportive services.  Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners has already allocated funds to construct the adult day care component of the senior center.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

To accommodate the needs of clients in the inner city whose increasing frailty requires more health oriented care (such as on site personal care to serve incontinent clients) and to expand services to meet the increased demand for daily care, day health care, and congregate and home-delivered meals, a new facility is required.  Partnerships with the Universities of South Florida and Tampa provide opportunities for intern placement for students in their nursing, social work and/or generic course of study.  Services will be provided to senior citizens 60 and over who are low income, minority, socially/economically needy, as well as those who are physically or mentally disabled in the areas of Ybor City, Downtown Tampa, Sulphur Springs, Seminole Heights, University, and Forest Hills.
