This project supports a statewide need as reflected in the Governor's goals of reducing drug use in the state by 50% by the Year 2005.  This project supports the recommendations made by the Florida Youth Initiative (a project of the Department of Children and Families) in their document "Florida Prevention System:  A Vision for the Prevention Component of the Florida Drug Control Strategy."  Specifically, the project will help to implement Recommendation 5:  "ensure knowledgeable and skilled professional and volunteer workforce through the provision of training and technical assistance that will continuously build human resources and advance the state of the art in prevention," and Recommendation 6, "Increase the capacity of agencies, organizations, programs and schools to provide prevention services through current information resources." Specifically, the Project will provide for the creation of regional prevention centers located throughout the state that will deliver training, technical assistance and information dissemination of science-based prevention practices.  The networking structure is patterned after the Federally funded Centers for the Application of Prevention Technology (CAPT) and the Texas Regional Prevention Centers.

Project Description:

Provide a networked system of twelve (12) prevention centers located throughout the state designed to provide training, technical assistance, and information dissemination about utilizing science-based approaches to prevention.  The Regional Prevention Centers (RPC's) will employ information-communication technology to keep the field apprised of all new funding opportunities, research and other news.  Each RPC will be charged with maximizing regional prevention efforts by performing a coordinating role and to increase the effectiveness and visibility of prevention of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use and abuse within the region.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:

95% of youth, adults and community-based organization will be satisfied with assistance provided by RPC's based on consumer satisfaction reports.   At least 25 training events will be conducted to increase community awareness of evidence-based prevention strategies.
