Project Description:

The Girls Advocacy Project (GAP)  works in collaboration with the Department of Juvenile Justice Detention Center personnel.  Project personnel review the intake, orientation and education procedures for girls and coordinates a schedule for gender-specific group talks.  The GAP staff also review other pertinent data such as each grils school and arrest history.  Proceeding the introduction session, five intensive, educational group talks lasting two-hours each are presented every other day (excluding weekends) in fourteen-day rotations.  In addition to the group talks,  there are one-to-one individual talks, the use of a GAP journal, interaction with the Public Defenders Office, and the Department of Juvenile Justice.  A community advisory board was also formed in January 2000 that recruits individuals from the community private and public foundations in the education, care and services to needed girls.
