| Alpha-1 is a major risk factor for the development of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), the 3rd leading cause of death in the US and Florida, and the only disease in the top-ten killers that is increasing. Florida has 780,000 COPD sufferers. Many may be Alpha-1 deficient and improperly diagnosed. The ultimate impact of this program will be to reduce public and private health care costs through early intervention; reduce the number of productive adults forced to turn to social security disability; and improve the health of thousands of Florida residents. | |||||||||

| A statewide Alpha-1 detection program will be expanded through teaching hospitals, clinics and physicians offices for individuals at risk for Alpha-1. Diagnosed individuals will be referred to specialists for treatment. Education on the diagnosis and treatment of Alpha-1 will be provided to physicians, respiratory and other healthcare professionals. An Alpha-1 public awareness campaign will be conducted through television, radio and billboards. | |||||||||
