Interpreter Services for the Hearing Impaired

The Legislature will make available a sign language interpreter for the hearing impaired upon timely request for floor debate, committee meetings, scheduled public events, and meetings with members of the Legislature and staff.

The person requesting service should contact the following in writing, if possible, and state the specific time, amount of time required, and date on which such services are requested. If the request is for a conference with a member or legislative staff, the requestor must have a confirmed appointment at the time of the request and must state with whom, when and where the conference will take place. The request must be made at least one full business day before the time services are needed. For example, a request for services on a Monday must be made by 5 p.m. of the preceding Thursday; requests for services on a Friday must be made by 5 p.m. on the preceding Wednesday.

Due to the shortage of qualified sign interpreters and their sometimes limited availability, requests made with less lead time and without the required information may result in the Legislature's inability to provide an interpreter.
