Job Title

District Legislative Assistant (District 15)

General Summary

The Office of State Senator Victor M. Torres (District 15) is now accepting applications for a Legislative Assistant in the district office located in Kissimmee, Florida.  This is work assisting a Senator with a variety of administrative and public relations matters requiring a thorough understanding of the policies, procedures, and operating practices of the Florida Legislature. 

Examples of Work Performed

  • Analyze and objectively summarize proposed legislation to determine its effectiveness and the impact of its passage on the state and other entities and individuals.
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Stay abreast of new and ongoing issues affecting assigned area of responsibility by collecting resource materials, reading industry publications, communicating with legislative committee staff, stakeholders, and agency personnel.
  • Preparing letters, summaries, talk-sheets or speeches, reports, and informational memoranda for the Senator.
  • Maintaining Senator’s calendar, scheduling appointments, meeting with constituents and interested persons.  
  • Handling constituent requests.
  • Attending state and local meetings and other events on behalf of the Senator, as well as working with groups to identify key issues for the district.
  • Formulates replies to correspondence in draft for final form depending on the complexity of the issue.
  • Performs other related duties as required

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Applicants must be self-motivated, and should possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. 
  • Applicants should possess a strong knowledge of Florida state government structure, functions and legislative processes.
  • Applicants must demonstrate the ability to conduct an in-depth, carefully documented policy analysis under minimal supervision within established deadlines.
  • The Legislative Assistant must travel within the district, and willing to relocate to Tallahassee during the Legislative Session, and travel to Tallahassee during committee meetings.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of office procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and use of software, such as Outlook.
  • Knowledge of the methods for organizing and presenting data.
  • Knowledge of Florida laws, the legislative and political processes and protocol.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use independent judgment in handling media inquiries and news releases.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to review work for accuracy and quality of content.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the demands of the public, press, and lobbyists.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work and make decisions independently.
  • Ability to compose correspondence.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain records.
  • Ability to manage time well.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member and to contribute to the effective internal functioning of the operation.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and one year of administrative experience.

A master’s degree from an accredited college or university can substitute for one year of the required experience.

Professional or non-professional administrative experience can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to write and speak both English and Spanish fluently.
