  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to dead bodies; amending s.

  3         406.61, F.S.; authorizing any science center in

  4         this state that is accredited by the American

  5         Association of Museums and is a member of the

  6         Association of Science and Technology Centers

  7         to transport plastinated bodies into, within,

  8         or out of this state and exhibit such bodies

  9         for the purpose of public education without the

10         consent of this state's anatomical board if the

11         science center notifies the board of any such

12         transportation or exhibition, as well as the

13         location and duration of any exhibition, at

14         least 30 days before such transportation or

15         exhibition; providing an effective date.

17  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

18  

19         Section 1.  Section 406.61, Florida Statutes, is

20  amended to read:

21         406.61  Selling, buying, or conveying bodies outside

22  state prohibited; exceptions, penalty.--Any person who sells

23  shall sell or buys buy any body or parts of bodies as

24  described in this chapter or any person except a recognized

25  Florida medical or dental school who transmits shall transmit

26  or conveys convey or causes cause to be transmitted or

27  conveyed such body or parts of bodies to any place outside

28  this state commits is guilty of a misdemeanor of the first

29  degree, punishable as provided in ss. 775.082 and 775.083.

30  However, nothing in this chapter does not prohibit shall be

31  construed as prohibiting the anatomical board from

 1  transporting human specimens outside the state for educational

 2  or scientific purposes and does not prohibit or as prohibiting

 3  the transport of bodies, parts of bodies, or tissue specimens

 4  in furtherance of a lawful examination, investigation, or

 5  autopsy conducted pursuant to s. 406.11. Any person,

 6  institution, or organization that conveys bodies or parts of

 7  bodies into or out of the state for medical education or

 8  research purposes shall notify the anatomical board of such

 9  intent and receive approval from the board. Any science center

10  in this state that is accredited by the American Association

11  of Museums and is a member of the Association of Science and

12  Technology Centers may transport plastinated bodies into,

13  within, or out of this state and exhibit such bodies for the

14  purpose of public education without the consent of the board

15  if the science center notifies the board of any such

16  transportation or exhibition, as well as the location and

17  duration of any exhibition, at least 30 days before such

18  transportation or exhibition.

19         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2007.

22                          SENATE SUMMARY

23    Authorizes certain science centers located in this state
      to transport plastinated bodies into, within, or out of
24    this state and exhibit such bodies for the purpose of
      public education without the consent of this state's
25    anatomical board if the science center notifies the board
      of any such transportation or exhibition, as well as the
26    location and duration of any exhibition, at least 30 days
      before such transportation or exhibition.
